WATCH | Brown Mogotsi’s bail bid rocked by alleged court escape plan in uniform

Johannesburg – Political fixer Brown Mogotsi’s latest bid for bail was on Tuesday overshadowed by allegations that he planned to escape from Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court disguised as a correctional services official.

According to the investigating officer, police received information on 20 August that Mogotsi allegedly intended to put on a correctional officer’s uniform and walk out of the court cells.

“New information came to light on the 20th of August 2026 at 7.29 in the morning,” the officer said.

The warning prompted additional security measures, including placing Mogotsi in leg irons when he appeared in court.

Mogotsi’s defence is seeking bail based on what it says are new facts, particularly a new and verifiable residential address. His earlier bail applications were rejected partly because of concerns over addresses that could not be verified.

The state, however, disputed the significance of the new address and argued that Mogotsi’s ability to change residences makes him “a flight risk.”

The investigating officer also alleged that Mogotsi had the ability to contact witnesses directly or indirectly.

Mogotsi has been in custody since his arrest in May. His arrest came after his appearance at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

He faces charges including perjury, defeating the ends of justice and unlawful possession of a firearm linked to allegations that he staged an attempt on his own life in Vosloorus in November 2025. He denies the charges.

The bail proceedings were postponed to 1 September 2026, pending a full report on the alleged escape plot.
