Durban – An undocumented foreign national was arrested after allegedly fleeing the scene when the truck he was driving overturned near King Shaka International Airport in KwaZulu-Natal.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the incident occurred on the M65 in La Mercy on Monday at about 11.33am after its operations centre received multiple calls for assistance.
Reaction officers arrived to find a white Nissan Diesel truck lying on its side after it had allegedly failed to negotiate a sharp bend.
RUSA said a man at the scene identified himself as the truck’s conductor and claimed the driver had fled before first responders arrived.
However, moments later the man allegedly ran into nearby bushes.
Reaction officers, assisted by a private security officer, pursued and apprehended him.
Further investigation revealed that the man had falsely identified himself as a conductor and was, in fact, the driver of the overturned truck, RUSA said.
The organisation added that the suspect is an undocumented foreign national from Mangochi, Malawi.
Two other men at the scene, who identified themselves as the truck’s conductors, confirmed that the apprehended man had been driving the vehicle when he allegedly failed to negotiate the bend, causing the truck to overturn.
The suspect was handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) at King Shaka International Airport for further investigation.
Police had not yet commented on the incident or confirmed whether any charges had been laid.
No injuries were immediately reported.
