Cape Town – Suspended police sergeant Fannie Nkosi has resigned from the South African Police Service (SAPS) ahead of disciplinary proceedings, while remaining in custody as he faces multiple criminal charges.
According to The Citizen, Nkosi submitted his resignation on Friday, 23 October, with national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirming that the service had received the letter.
TimesLIVE also reported that his resignation came ahead of an internal disciplinary hearing.
Nkosi, formerly attached to the Gauteng organised crime unit, was suspended following his testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where alleged links between senior police officials and suspected underworld figures came under scrutiny.
He was arrested on 2 April after police raided his Pretoria North home, recovering firearms, ammunition, a stun grenade, official police dockets and R52,700 in cash, according to SABC News and The Citizen.

Nkosi faces charges including theft, fraud, defeating the ends of justice, unlawful possession of explosives and offences relating to the safeguarding of firearms and ammunition. He has remained in custody since being denied bail in April.
His legal team has also asked the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to reconsider the decision to prosecute him. According to EWN, the case was postponed to 5 November for the outcome of the representations.
State prosecutor Tholoana Sekhonyana told the court: “The matter is on the roll for outcome of representations. The defence needs representations to the Director of Public Prosecutions,” as reported by The Citizen.
Nkosi faces a separate case in Limpopo involving allegations that he fraudulently obtained a police docket in Thohoyandou by impersonating a senior officer and that evidence was subsequently tampered with. The allegations relate to a 2022 case involving dagga, unlicensed firearms and explosives.
He has also been accused of acting as an intermediary between former deputy national police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya and alleged underworld figures Katiso “KT” Molefe and Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
Nkosi’s resignation does not resolve the criminal cases against him, which remain subject to the legal process.
