Polokwane – A 44-year-old taxi driver accused in connection with a devastating minibus taxi fire that killed two schoolchildren in Limpopo has been granted bail.
According to the South African Police Service, Mogau Mosehla appeared before the Nebo Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday following his arrest over the fatal incident that occurred in Masemola under the Sekhukhune District.
Mosehla was granted bail of R6 000 and the case was postponed to 21 August 2026.
The tragedy unfolded on 13 May at about 15:15 along the Apel Cross Road via the Tswaing gravel road towards Nkotwokwane Village.
Police said a Toyota Quantum minibus taxi transporting about 22 schoolchildren between the ages of seven and 10 allegedly caught fire while travelling on the gravel road as the driver transported the children home from school.
Two children died inside the burning vehicle, while seven others sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for medical treatment. Thirteen children escaped unharmed.
Police subsequently opened two counts of culpable homicide against the driver, along with charges relating to alleged contraventions of the National Road Traffic Act, including overloading and failure to produce an operating certificate.
“The police investigations are continuing,” SAPS said in a statement.
