Durban – A suspected intruder was found burnt to death after a fire gutted a locked cosmetics shop in Zwelisha, KwaZulu-Natal, early Friday morning.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), its members were called to the scene after reports of a blaze at the premises.
“On arrival, the rear section of the premises was well alight, with flammable stock such as plastic goods and clothing contributing to the intensity of the fire,” RUSA said.
Preliminary information indicates that the shop had been securely closed at about 20:20 on Thursday evening.
At approximately 02:20, the owner was alerted by a nearby relative that the building was on fire.
“The owner and an employee confirmed that no one remained inside when the business was closed,” the statement added.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze before searching the building, where the body of an adult male was discovered.
“The individual is believed to have gained unauthorised access to the premises,” RUSA said.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.
