Mpumalanga – A 44-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a police sergeant and the wounding of a police constable in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed on Sunday, 19 July, that the suspect was traced and arrested at his residence less than 24 hours after the attack, which occurred on Saturday, 18 July.
According to police, the suspect allegedly fled the scene after the shooting but later returned after the crime scene had been cleared.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
The case has been handed over to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) for further investigation.
Acting Mpumalanga Provincial Police Commissioner Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi praised officers for their swift response, saying the arrest demonstrated SAPS’ commitment to ensuring those who attack law enforcement officers are brought to justice.
“The arrest of this suspect sends a clear message that attacks on our men and women in blue can never be tolerated. The team worked tirelessly and responded with urgency to ensure that the perpetrator is swiftly brought to justice. He must face the full might of the law for the alleged brutal killing of a dedicated officer,” said Mkhwanazi.
Police have not yet released the identity of the suspect or disclosed a possible motive for the attack.
The suspect is expected to appear in court soon on charges related to the murder of the police sergeant and the attempted murder of the injured constable.
Investigations are continuing.
