Seven killed, five injured in two Western Cape mass shootings

Cape Town – Western Cape police are investigating two separate mass shooting incidents that left seven people dead and five others injured in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain, and Philippi East on Wednesday evening.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the first shooting occurred at about 20:10 at the corner of Laura Street and 8th Avenue in Lost City, Tafelsig.

Police said five men were standing outside a local tuck shop when they were approached by armed suspects who allegedly opened fire.

“Three victims, aged 18, 19 and 51, sustained fatal gunshot wounds and were declared deceased at the scene. Two additional victims, aged 17 and 22, were transported to a medical facility for treatment,” police said.

About 20 minutes later, police responded to a second shooting at a residence in Marcus Garvey, Philippi East, where seven people had been shot.

Four victims, aged between 17 and 20, died from their injuries, while three others were admitted to hospital for treatment.

Police said the circumstances surrounding both shootings are under investigation, with detectives pursuing all available leads to identify and arrest those responsible.

The motive for the attacks has not yet been established and forms part of the ongoing investigation.

In response to the incidents, police have increased deployments in the affected communities to prevent further violence and improve public safety.

“Members will maintain a visible presence and continue to conduct crime prevention operations aimed at stabilising the communities and ensuring the safety of residents,” SAPS said in a statement.

Police have appealed to anyone with information that could assist the investigations to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or submit information anonymously via the MySAPSApp.

“Western Cape police condemn these acts of violence in the strongest possible terms and remain committed to bringing those responsible to justice,” SAPS said.
