Cape Town – A 22-seater scholar transport bus en route to Jumba Senior Secondary School in the Eastern Cape was swept away by rising water at the Efata Bridge amid severe weather caused by a cold front.
The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) confirmed the bus was linked to one of its members.
The driver had called for help earlier when the bus got stuck, but the water rose before assistance arrived.
“According to preliminary reports, the driver had contacted the vehicle owner earlier in the morning to request assistance, having noticed that the vehicle was stuck. Unfortunately, by the time help arrived, the water had engulfed the bridge,” said Santaco.

It said that the number of pupils on board is unknown due to exam season schedules.
“At this stage, the exact number of learners onboard cannot be confirmed, as it is currently examination season and learners attend school according to varying timetables.”
At least three pupils were seen clinging to trees and were rescued.
