Gqeberha – The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gqeberha has warned motorists travelling along the R75 freeway, particularly in the area behind Despatch, to remain vigilant following reports of vehicles being pelted with stones over the weekend.
According to SAPS, several vehicles travelling along the route were allegedly struck by stones, resulting in damage to property. Police said the circumstances surrounding the incidents were still under investigation.
SAPS warned that the attacks could potentially be used to force motorists to stop, leaving them vulnerable to robbery.
“While the circumstances surrounding the incidents are still being investigated, motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution, as such incidents could potentially be used as a tactic to force motorists to stop, making them vulnerable to robbery,” the police said.
Motorists whose vehicles are struck by stones have been advised not to stop in isolated areas to inspect the damage.
“Where possible, they should continue driving to a safe, well-lit and populated area before stopping to assess any damage or seek assistance,” SAPS said.
Police urged motorists to remain alert while travelling along the R75 and to avoid stopping in isolated areas, particularly at night.
Those who believe they are being targeted should drive to the nearest police station or another safe and populated location, SAPS said.
Motorists have also been advised to report suspicious activity or individuals to police and to avoid confronting or approaching suspected perpetrators.
SAPS Despatch said it was continuing with patrols in the affected area while investigations into the reported incidents were ongoing.
Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incidents or has information that could assist the investigation to come forward.
“SAPS reminds motorists that their safety is paramount. Do not put yourself at risk by stopping in an isolated area,” the police said.
