Komatipoort – The South African Police Service has hailed a senior officer for his bravery following a high-risk operation that led to the recovery of human remains from a crocodile along the Komati River.
Acting National Commissioner, Puleng Dimpane, praised Captain Johan “Pottie” Potgieter for what she described as an extraordinary display of courage and selflessness during the complex mission.
According to SAPS, Potgieter was airlifted by a SANParks helicopter and lowered into a crocodile-infested section of the river, where he secured a crocodile using a rope under dangerous conditions.
The animal, which had already been euthanised, was then removed to allow investigators and forensic experts to recover suspected human remains.
Police confirmed that body parts found inside the crocodile’s intestines have been collected and will undergo DNA testing to establish the identity of the deceased.
Dimpane said Potgieter’s actions went beyond the call of duty and reflected the commitment of SAPS members to protect and serve, even in life-threatening situations.
“Captain Potgieter’s willingness to place his own life at risk… reflects the unwavering commitment of SAPS members,” she said.
The police service said the operation marked a critical step in an ongoing investigation into a suspected missing person, while commending the officer’s professionalism and dedication.
