Musina – The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has seized illicit cigarettes and alcohol worth R695,181 during anti-smuggling operations at the Beitbridge Port of Entry in Limpopo.
The haul followed a week of intensified border operations and a review of tactical plans aimed at disrupting illicit cross-border activities, Truck and Freight reported.
According to the SANDF, members of Bravo Company, led by Sergeant Mavundla, were conducting a foot patrol on the eastern side of the Beitbridge Port of Entry in the early hours of Sunday, 26 July, when they intercepted suspects transporting contraband.
The suspects fled after spotting the soldiers, abandoning luggage containing illicit cigarettes valued at R534,531.
At the same time, SANDF members operating on the opposite side of the port seized additional illicit cigarettes worth R145,770 and alcoholic beverages valued at R14,880.

All confiscated goods were handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for further investigation and processing.
The SANDF said the successful operation followed a tactical reassessment by the Officer Commanding 4 Artillery Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Mmamaeke Emmanuel Mello, and his team, who refined their operational plans after a week of heightened border security activities.
Acting Officer Commanding Joint Tactical Headquarters Limpopo, Lieutenant Colonel Joy Stasie, praised the soldiers for their efforts.
“This success is a direct result of sound leadership, thorough planning, and the application of training received over the years. Our members continue to serve the people of South Africa with pride and integrity,” Stasie said.
The SANDF said the operation demonstrates its continued commitment to protecting South Africa’s borders and supporting other law enforcement agencies.
“The SA National Defence Force reaffirms its commitment to supporting other law enforcement agencies in the fight against smuggling and illicit trade along South Africa’s borders.”
The latest seizure forms part of ongoing efforts to curb the illegal movement of contraband through one of South Africa’s busiest border crossings.
