Qwaqwa – A man in his twenties was rescued from the Namahadi River near Lancaster in Qwaqwa after falling from the Namahadi River bridge on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Phuthaditjhaba Community Service Centre received a report of a person who had jumped from the bridge into the water at approximately 16:00.
Rescue teams, including the Phuthaditjhaba Police Rescue and Diving Unit, Tactical Response Team members, off-duty police officers and the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality Fire and Rescue Service, were activated and responded to the scene.
“Upon arrival, they found the young man motionless in the river. They managed to bring him safely to the riverbank, where it was discovered that he was unable to move,” SAPS said in a statement.
The man was subsequently transported by ambulance to a local hospital for further medical treatment.
SAPS identified the man as Thabo Sediadia from Bolata Village in Qwaqwa. He reportedly told the rescue team that he had heard voices before the incident.
Free State provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia commended the rescue teams for their swift response and cooperation.
“I would like to express my appreciation for the continued cooperation and strong working relationship between SAPS and the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality Fire and Rescue Service,” Lesia said.
“Their swift response demonstrates their commitment to saving lives and serving our communities during emergencies.”
Mental health and water safety
As October marks Mental Health Awareness Month, Lesia urged families to support people experiencing emotional or psychological distress.
“Life presents challenges, but we must stand together, show compassion and support those who may be going through difficult times,” he said.
The provincial commissioner also warned parents and guardians to closely supervise children near rivers and other dangerous waterways, particularly during hot weather when children may seek relief by swimming.
“I urge parents and guardians to supervise children closely, keep them away from dangerous waterways and ensure that they are always safe,” Lesia said.
“Let us work together to protect lives and prevent further tragedies.”
