Oakford – A newborn baby girl has been found abandoned in a Woolworths shopping bag in a bush in Oakford, KwaZulu-Natal, after two people heard her crying while walking to a local tuckshop.
The baby was discovered on Tuesday morning, 13 October, after the man and woman followed the sound to a bush near several houses.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the pair found the newborn wrapped in a black T-shirt inside the bag and used scissors to cut it open.
The baby’s umbilical cord had been cut but was not tied, while the placenta was also inside the bag.
RUSA paramedics examined the newborn at the scene and found her to be in good health.
Reaction officers began questioning residents in an effort to establish who the baby’s mother was.
During their enquiries, a woman told first responders that she had seen another woman discarding the bag in the bush on Monday afternoon, 12 October.
RUSA said enquiries were continuing on Tuesday morning, with officers seeking information about women in the area who may have recently given birth.
Anyone with information that could help identify or locate the woman is urged to contact the RUSA Operations Centre on 086 123 4333.
