Mpumalanga – Police have arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with the alleged murder of his 30-year-old next-door neighbour in Mmametlake.
According to the South African Police Service, the victim’s half-naked body was discovered in a bush on Monday, 20 April 2026, by a group of women collecting firewood.
The women alerted members of the local Community Policing Forum, who then contacted police.
The victim, who had visible bruises on her body, was declared dead at the scene.
Police investigations, assisted by members of the community, led to the arrest of the suspect, who is reported to be the victim’s neighbour.
The accused is expected to appear before the Marapyane Periodical Court on Wednesday, 22 April 2026, facing a charge of murder. Authorities indicated that additional charges may be added as investigations continue.
Zeph Mkhwanazi, Acting Provincial Commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, condemned the incident and commended the community for working with law enforcement.
“Cases of gender-based violence and femicide remain top priorities in the province. This case will be treated with urgency, and we will do everything in our power to ensure that the suspect is convicted,” Mkhwanazi said.
Police have not yet released further details as investigations are ongoing.
