Cape Town — The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) has appealed to President Cyril Ramaphosa and Electricity Minister Kgosientso Ramokgopa to suspend load shedding over the weekend as they prepare to celebrate Eid.
At the end of the month of Ramadhan, Muslims celebrate with a festival marking the end of the fast.
The MJC penned a letter to the Presidency, expressing their desire to have load shedding suspended as they look to celebrate this sacred time in their calendar.
“Muslims all over the world will celebrate Eid this weekend coming. Eid-ul-Fitr will mark the end of the holy month of Ramadhaan and is a period of profound spirituality, joy, and a time to be with family and friends. Families will congregate, cook family meals, and share in the essence of joy and togetherness.”
The council expressed its fear of load shedding impeding Muslims “from experiencing the full extent of such quality family time”.
However, their seems to be no let-up after Eskom announced that it was forced to implement Stage 6 load shedding “until further notice” due to more units at four of its power stations being lost.
21 April 2023: Stage 6 loadshedding will be implemented at 05:00 until further notice. This is due to failures of generating units at Tutuka, Kriel, Duvha and Kendal power stations since yesterday. Eskom will publish a further update as soon as there are any significant changes.
