Mthatha – A 29-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly murdering his older brother and staging the crime scene to make it appear as though the victim had taken his own life.
The suspect was arrested by the South African Police Service’s OR Tambo District Detectives Task Team in Bhungu locality, Mbhobheleni Administrative Area, near Libode, on Wednesday.
He is expected to appear in the Libode Magistrate’s Court on Friday on a charge of murder.
According to police, the incident occurred on 29 June 2024 at about 06:20.
“It is alleged that on the day in question, the suspect came across the deceased in company of the woman they were both secretly dating and he became furious,” the police said.
“An altercation started between the two brothers which resulted in the strangling of the victim to death. The murder suspect allegedly hanged the deceased afterwards on a tree to appear as if the victim hanged himself.”
The case remained under investigation until detectives from the OR Tambo District Detectives Task Team, which focuses on unsolved murder cases, gathered sufficient evidence to arrest the suspect.
OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, commended the task team for its investigation.
“He praised the team’s sterling work in uncovering the truth to ensure that justice ultimately prevails,” police said.
The investigation is continuing.
