Tsolo – A 40-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly assaulting his 69-year-old mother to death in Upper Mjika locality, Tsolo, in the Eastern Cape.
The incident happened at about 6.30pm on Friday, 14 August 2026, when the woman was allegedly assaulted with a stick.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the victim was rushed to hospital but died from her injuries upon arrival.
Police said community members were holding the suspect when officers arrived at the scene. The man had allegedly been assaulted by members of the community and was also taken to hospital under police guard.
“The motive for the assault that led to the death of the deceased forms part of the investigation,” SAPS said.
Acting OR Tambo District Commissioner Brigadier Vukile Ntuli welcomed the arrest and condemned the incident.
“It is so disturbing that a mother and son relationship can end up in such a gruesome manner,” Ntuli said.
The suspect will face a murder charge in the Tsolo Magistrates Court once he has recovered, police said.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death is continuing.
