Durban – Two suspected armed robbers were shot and killed, while a third was injured, during a shootout with police in KwaMsane, northern KwaZulu-Natal, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), officers responded to a report of an armed robbery in the Hluhluwe policing area shortly after midnight on 2 June 2026.
Police said the victim provided a description of the suspects’ vehicle, which was later spotted travelling south on the N2. Officers pursued the vehicle, with members of the uMkhanyakude District Task Team joining the operation.
The chase continued from Hluhluwe to KwaMsane, where an exchange of gunfire allegedly broke out between police and the suspects.
SAPS said three suspects were initially believed to have been fatally wounded during the shootout. However, one of the suspects later regained consciousness while forensic experts were processing the scene and was rushed to hospital under police guard.
Police recovered three firearms from the suspects and have launched a search for at least three more suspects believed to have escaped.
The circumstances surrounding the robbery and the subsequent shootout are under investigation.
No police injuries were reported.
