Bloemfontein – The South African Police Service has welcomed the sentencing of a 46-year-old man to 24 years’ imprisonment for the murder of his former partner.
The Bloemfontein High Court handed down the sentence to Tumelo Mothupi on Wednesday, nearly 18 months after the fatal attack.
Police said the incident occurred on 19 October 2024 when Mothupi visited his 51-year-old ex-girlfriend at her home.
Mothupi fled the scene but was seen by a family member as he left. Following an intelligence-driven investigation, police tracked him down and arrested him on 3 November 2024.
He was denied bail and remained in custody until his conviction and sentencing.
The investigation was led by Sechaba Tsholo of the Bloemspruit SAPS Detectives Branch.
Police said the conviction forms part of ongoing efforts to combat gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa.
