Cape Town – Antoinette Zandberg is still reeling in shock after her partner Christo Fritz was swept away by raging waters when a boat he was testing with a friend went over the Roodeplaat Dam wall in Tshwane on Saturday.
Rescue and recovery teams were said to have arrived shortly after the incident in search of Fritz but only found a piece of the small boat and life jackets.
Antoinette said everyone is helping her with the intense search of her partner and she’s trying to help too but she’s barely coping.
“I’m not coping and I feel helpless. I’m constantly stressed and I can’t even sleep. I keep hoping I will wake up beside him,” she said in a TimesLive report.
Fritz’s friend, who was found alive on Sunday, said they were close to the wall when the engine stopped and the water pushed them over. He said at that moment it was a matter of survival.
Antoinette said the boat drifted 20km away from the wall.
News24 reported that the search team has been on the ground and in the water, with helicopter and drone support in search of Fritz.
“Earlier, a body was spotted, but Thabo Charles Mabaso of Tshwane Emergency Services said that on closer inspection it was that of an animal, so rescuers carried on with the search,” the report said.
