Johannesburg – Eleven suspects aged between 27 and 46 were arrested at a fuel plant in Meyerton, Gauteng, on Sunday morning in connection with the alleged theft of fuel, according to the South African Police Service.
The arrests were carried out by members of the Hawks’ Tactical Operations Management Section (TOMS) following intelligence about an alleged robbery planned at the facility.
Police said the information was operationalised and the area placed under surveillance.
During the operation, investigators observed two fuel tankers entering the premises.
“Preliminary investigation found that it had been placed under administration,” police said in a statement.
Authorities further alleged that security personnel guarding the premises may have been working with the suspects arrested at the scene.
“Preliminary investigation also purports that the security personnel guarding the premises might be in cahoots with the nine suspects arrested,” the statement said.
The crime scene remained active on Sunday as investigators continued processing the area and gathering evidence.
Police have not yet disclosed the quantity or value of the fuel allegedly stolen, and further charges may be added as investigations continue.
