Johannesburg – The City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services has placed its teams on high alert as severe thunderstorms are expected to hit parts of Gauteng on Wednesday.
The South African Weather Service (Saws) issued a Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms, with heavy downpours, damaging winds, hail and excessive lightning expected to cause flooding and possible damage to infrastructure.
Gauteng is forecast to be cloudy and cold, with scattered showers and thundershowers.

City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson Kagiso Pasha said the city was closely monitoring the weather conditions.
“Our specialised rescue unit remains ready to respond to any water-related emergencies,” Pasha said.
He urged motorists and pedestrians to avoid flooded areas and seek shelter during thunderstorms.
“Please also take extra care around lightning and avoid open spaces and isolated trees,” Pasha said.

Residents have also been urged not to cross flooded roads or bridges, while motorists have been advised to reduce speed, switch on their headlights and maintain a safe following distance.
The public can contact the city’s command and control centre on 011 375 5911 in an emergency.
