Johannesburg – The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng has launched a manhunt for a group of suspects following a mass shooting that left 12 people dead and several others injured at Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland on Tuesday night.
Police said officers were called to the scene at around 23:10 after reports of an ongoing shooting.
“Upon arrival, police found numerous victims who had sustained gunshot wounds. Emergency Medical Services were immediately summoned to the scene to assist the injured,” police said in a statement.
“Preliminary investigations reveal that 12 people died as a result of the attack. Eight adult males and three adult females were declared dead at the scene, while one additional male victim later succumbed to his injuries in hospital. At least nine other victims were transported to various medical facilities for treatment of gunshot wounds.”
According to SAPS, it is alleged that more than 10 suspects arrived in a white Toyota Quantum near a petrol station in Cleveland before splitting into groups.
The suspects reportedly entered the informal settlement through two separate entrances and moved through the area, opening fire on residents at multiple locations before fleeing in the same vehicle.
Detectives from both provincial and district units, supported by crime intelligence and forensic experts, have been deployed to investigate the incident and track down those responsible.
Authorities say the motive for the attack remains unknown and forms part of ongoing investigations. No arrests have been made.

The incident is among the latest violent attacks under investigation by South African Police Service as authorities intensify efforts to curb serious and violent crime across Gauteng.
