Sasolburg – The Hawks are appealing to the public for information that could help locate a man wanted for questioning in connection with a cash-in-transit robbery in Sasolburg.
Welkom-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) detectives are seeking Mothoezane Xaba of Daza Hostel as a person of interest in the investigation.
The robbery occurred on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, while security guards were carrying out routine cash collections at retailers in Sasolburg.
According to the Hawks, one of the guards was confronted by an armed suspect who pointed a firearm at him before taking a bag containing an undisclosed amount of cash.
“Approximately five suspects escaped in a blue Nissan Tiida with registration number CY28TPGP,” the South African Police Service said in a statement.
The security guards pursued the suspects to Minaar Street in Vaalpark, where the alleged robbers abandoned the vehicle and hijacked an Amarok Quantum minibus.
The suspects allegedly took the minibus driver with them before driving towards the Vereeniging taxi rank.
Police said the suspects later abandoned the minibus and boarded a taxi travelling to Vosloorus.
During the incident, two vehicles in the area and several building walls were damaged in the shooting.
“No fatalities or injuries were reported,” police said.
Xaba, who is believed to be originally from KwaZulu-Natal, is being sought for questioning as investigators continue probing the robbery.
The Hawks urged anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact Detective Captain Chris Mochesane on 071 481 2546.
Police appealed to members of the public not to approach Xaba themselves but to provide information directly to the investigating officer.
