KuGompo – At least five people have died and one person was critically injured in a horrific head-on collision on the N2 near Mooiplaas outside KuGompo City in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday.
According to Eastern Cape Department of Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose, the crash involved a Volkswagen Polo and a Renault, with the Renault bursting into flames on impact, trapping its driver inside.
“The Eastern Cape Department of Transport can confirm that five people have lost their lives, while one person sustained critical injuries, following a head-on collision involving a Volkswagen Polo and a Renault on the N2 near Mooiplaas, just outside KuGompo City.”
The injured survivor was rushed to a hospital in KuGompo City.
Binqose said the Renault driver, believed to be a teacher at Qumrha Primary School, was burnt beyond recognition, while four occupants of the Volkswagen Polo — one man and three women — also died.
“The N2 remains completely closed to traffic as rescue, recovery and crash investigation teams continue their work at the scene. Motorists are urged to avoid the area and make use of alternative routes where possible.”
The tragedy comes as heavy rain and hazardous weather continue to affect the Eastern Cape. Authorities warned that wet and slippery roads, poor visibility and possible black ice in high-lying areas have significantly increased the risk of serious crashes.
The transport department extended condolences to the families of the victims, wished the injured survivor a speedy recovery, and urged motorists to slow down, maintain safe following distances, use headlights and avoid unnecessary travel during dangerous weather conditions.
