Cape Town – South Africa is mourning the loss of veteran actor, theatre stalwart and gospel musician Seputla Sebogodi, whose death has marked the end of an era in the country’s entertainment industry.
According to Sunday World, Sebogodi’s family confirmed in a statement on Thursday that he died on the evening of 15 July 2026 following complications related to diabetes.
“The immediate family of Seputla Sebogodi confirms, with profound sadness, his passing on the evening of 15 July 2026 following complications related to diabetes.”
Best known for his portrayal of the formidable Kenneth Mashaba in the iconic SABC soapie Generations, Sebogodi leaves behind a legacy spanning more than four decades. His commanding performances and unmistakable screen presence earned him a place among South Africa’s most respected actors.
Sebogodi began his acting career in the 1980s and first rose to prominence in the Pedi drama Bophelo ke Semphekgo, where he played the womanising Nkwesheng. He later starred in the sitcom Suburban Bliss before joining Generations in 2005 as the ruthless businessman Kenneth Mashaba, a role that became one of the most memorable in the soapie’s history.

His career extended far beyond Generations. Sebogodi appeared in numerous television productions, including Rhythm City, Scandal!, The River, Lithapo, The Republic and the internationally acclaimed historical epic The Woman King. His film credits also included Mr Bones, Beat the Drum, Critical Assignment, Hijack Stories, The Long Run and The Story of Racheltjie de Beer.
A celebrated theatre performer and mentor, Sebogodi remained deeply committed to developing South African storytelling and supporting emerging talent throughout his career.
According to News24, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he collaborated with fellow veteran actor Jerry Phele on the political satire O Tseleng Jeso (Jesus is Coming), highlighting his unwavering dedication to live theatre despite the challenges facing the industry.

Away from the screen and stage, Sebogodi was also an accomplished gospel musician. He released several albums, including Nkuke Morena, Re Tshwarele Melato and Buya, showcasing another dimension of his artistic talent and reflecting his deep faith.
His outstanding contribution to the entertainment industry earned him two South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs), recognising a career defined by excellence, versatility and consistency.
Sebogodi’s passing has left a void in South African entertainment. However, his remarkable body of work, which spans television, film, theatre and music, ensures that his legacy will continue to inspire generations of performers and entertain audiences for years to come.
