KwaZulu-Natal – The South African Police Service (SAPS) has warned members of the public about a job scam involving WhatsApp messages offering police employment in exchange for payments of up to R15 000.
According to SAPS, scammers are using the profile picture of KwaZulu-Natal Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Corporate Services, Major General (Dr) SB Ngcobo, to make the bogus offers appear legitimate.
“The modus operandi of these scammers is understood to be that of sending WhatsApp messages to unsuspecting members of the public, promising employment in the South African Police Service,” SAPS said.
The scammers allegedly send prospective victims an application form before demanding R15 000 for the purported employment opportunity.
“Victims are however instructed to pay a deposit of R7 500 with the balance payable upon signing employment papers,” the police said.
SAPS urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious messages or attempted scams at their nearest police station.
“Employment in the South African Police Service is not for sale,” the police warned.
“Nobody should be asked to pay to get employed in the police, whoever is doing so is committing a crime,” SAPS said.
