Eight bodies, mounting questions: Gauteng killings probe gets high-level attention

Johannesburg – A high-level government and police delegation has met investigators in Gauteng following the discovery of eight women’s bodies in different parts of the province.

The meeting, held at the South African Police Service (SAPS) Gauteng Provincial Head Office in Parktown, focused on developments in the investigations and efforts to identify those responsible.

The delegation was led by Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia, Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Sindisiwe Chikunga, Deputy Police Minister Polly Boshielo, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane.

According to SAPS, the delegation met with senior police management and investigators to receive a briefing on the cases.

“The meeting focused on the progress of the investigations, the deployment of multidisciplinary expertise, and measures being implemented to ensure that those responsible are identified and brought to justice,” SAPS said.

The police service said the meeting demonstrated the seriousness with which authorities are treating the deaths and their commitment to using all available resources in the investigation.

“The meeting underscores the seriousness with which the government and the South African Police Service are treating these incidents and the commitment to ensuring that every available resource and area of expertise is brought to bear on the investigations,” SAPS said.

The latest development comes as investigators continue probing a series of women’s deaths in Gauteng, with police working to establish whether the cases are connected.

SAPS said the multidisciplinary investigation teams would continue working to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and identify those responsible.
