Cape Town – The Department of Basic Education has rejected viral social media claims that public schools will close for extra days next week, calling the information false and misleading.
The department clarified that 28–30 April 2026 are normal school days, with learners expected to attend classes as scheduled after the long weekend.
“Kindly note that according to the official 2026 Calendar for Public Schools, 28, 29, and 30 April are normal school days. Learners in public schools are expected to be at school as planned. Don’t fall victim to fake news!,” the department posted on social media.

Confusion arose after a post suggested schools would remain closed following the current break, but the DBE stressed that only the official holidays in the 2026 calendar apply.
Schools will reopen on Tuesday, 28 April, and continue until Thursday, 30 April, before the Workers’ Day public holiday on 1 May.
The DBE urged parents and learners to rely on official announcements to avoid misinformation and disruptions to schooling.
