Cape Town – Six family members died in a devastating fire at the Marikana informal settlement in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni, early Monday morning.
Despite residents’ efforts to contain the blaze, the structure was completely destroyed, reports said.
Firefighters later discovered six bodies burned beyond recognition.
“On arrival, our firefighters found a four-room shack which was alight. Members of the public were already battling with the blaze and firefighters managed to extinguish the fire.
“Unfortunately, they found six family members who have perished, and their bodies were unfortunately burnt beyond recognition and one of the family members, a seven-year-old daughter, managed to survive with critical injuries and was transported to the nearest medical facility for further treatment,” Ekurhuleni emergency services spokesperson William Ntladi said.
A seven-year-old girl survived but was critically injured and taken to hospital.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire, and police have launched an investigation.
