Free State – Eleven people, including five children, have died after a bus carrying about 60 passengers overturned on the N1 north of Trompsburg in the Free State on Thursday night.
According to the Free State Department of Health, the crash occurred shortly after 21:30, about 24km north of Trompsburg in the direction of Edenburg.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) said the bus came to rest across the highway, forcing emergency responders and law enforcement officers to manage the scene while rescue operations continued.
“The bus is lying across the N1, obstructing the roadway.”
Authorities confirmed that multiple people were injured in the crash, with rescue teams continuing to assess passengers and free those trapped inside the wreckage.
Initial reports from the scene indicated that at least 14 injured people had been found outside the bus.
“14 injured persons outside the bus.”
Rescue crews were also working to free a child trapped beneath the overturned vehicle.
“One child’s hand is trapped under the bus.”

The department said the death toll currently stands at 11, although the identities of the victims have not yet been confirmed.
“11 people are reported as deceased so far – five children and six adults – their gender and identities cannot be fully determined at this stage.”
Officials added that rescue efforts were still underway.
“Triage and extrication is ongoing.”
Motorists travelling between Trompsburg and Edenburg have been urged to exercise caution and avoid the area if possible.
The department warned of major disruptions on the busy national route.
“Motorists travelling on the N1 between Trompsburg and Edenburg are urged to be on high alert, reduce speed, and expect significant delays. Traffic officials are diverting vehicles where possible. Road users are advised to use alternative routes.”
Emergency Medical Services and law enforcement agencies remain on the scene, with authorities expected to release further details as rescue operations and investigations continue.
The Free State Department of Health extended its condolences to the victims’ families.
“We extend our sincere condolences to the families of those who have lost loved ones and wish a speedy recovery to all the injured.”
