Johannesburg – A serious accident on the M1 Highway in Booysens has left several people injured and caused significant traffic disruptions on Monday morning.
According to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), the crash involved a passenger bus and six other vehicles near the Booysens Road off-ramp.
The incident occurred when a passenger allegedly became involved in an altercation with the bus driver and reportedly grabbed the steering wheel while the vehicle was travelling south.
This caused the driver to lose control, resulting in the bus veering across the highway’s median and crashing into oncoming vehicles on the M1 Northbound lane.

“There are multiple injuries reported; however, no fatalities have been confirmed at this stage,” JMPD said in an advisory posted on social media.
Emergency services and law enforcement officials remain at the scene.
The M1 North at Booysens Road has been temporarily closed as authorities manage the aftermath and clear the roadway. JMPD has urged motorists to use Crownwood Road or Xavier Street as alternative routes to avoid the congestion.
The exact number of injured individuals and their conditions are still being verified.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is currently underway
