Johannesburg – Controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala will stay behind bars after the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court denied him bail on Wednesday.
Matlala faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder and money laundering after his ex-lover Tebogo Thobejane’s car was allegedly shot at in Sandton in October 2023. Although accused of masterminding the attack, he denies involvement and intends to plead not guilty.
He was arrested with his wife, Tsakani, who was granted R20 000 bail on health grounds and to care for their children. Matlala offered to pay R100 000 for bail, saying he is not violent or a flight risk.

However, the state alleged he holds a fraudulent Eswatini ID under another surname, has a trust in Mauritius, and travelled to Eswatini twice, making him a flight risk.
It also claimed his devices showed links to law enforcement and politicians — evidence his defence says was planted.
Magistrate Syta Prinsloo ruled Matlala failed to show exceptional circumstances for release, and that the charges make him a possible danger to society. The case resumes on 7 October.
