Cape Town – Eleven people were shot and killed in three separate incidents in Langa, Gugulethu and Khayelitsha overnight, prompting police to increase visibility in the affected areas and other identified hotspots.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said Provincial Serious Violent Crimes Unit detectives were investigating the shootings, which occurred between Saturday night and early Sunday morning.
In Khayelitsha, three men aged 25, 31 and 35 were shot dead in the TR Section of Lingelethu West at about 10.50pm on Saturday.
About five minutes earlier, four men and a woman were killed in a shooting on Winnie Mandela Street in Phase 3, KwaLanga, Langa.
In the third incident, two men and a woman were shot dead in the Barcelona informal settlement in Gugulethu at about 4.10am on Sunday.
Two other people were injured in the Gugulethu shooting.
SAPS said police had reinforced deployments in the affected communities and other areas identified as potential hotspots.
“The motive for the shooting incidents is the subject of the police investigations that are currently underway,” the police said.
Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Sizakhele Dyantyi and his management team were visiting the affected communities to strengthen investigations and oversee police deployments.
“No arrests have been effected yet,” SAPS said.
Police appealed to anyone with information that could assist investigators to come forward.
“Anyone with information that could help expedite the police investigations is urged to contact the SAPS #CrimeStop on 08600 10111. Information may also be shared anonymously via the #MySAPSApp. All information received will be handled in strict confidence.”
Investigations into the three shootings are continuing.
