Gqeberha – The South African Police Service (SAPS) has condemned a suspected murder-suicide involving two police officers after a sergeant allegedly shot and killed his wife before turning the firearm on himself in Parsonsvlei, Gqeberha.
According to SAPS, the incident occurred at around 00:05 on Saturday, 18 July 2026, following an alleged altercation at the couple’s home.
“Preliminary information indicates that the couple was involved in an altercation at their residence in Parsonsvlei, Gqeberha, before the shooting on Saturday, 18 July 2026, at about 00h05,” the police said in a statement.
“Police were called to the scene, where they found the bodies of a 34-year-old female police official and her 44-year-old husband, who is also a police official.
“Both individuals were found with gunshot wounds and were declared deceased at the scene. The 34-year-old female is a Sergeant based at Mount Road SAPS, and the 44-year-old male is also a Sergeant based at New Brighton SAPS.”
The circumstances surrounding this tragedy form part of the ongoing investigation,” the statement read.
Police confirmed that the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered and confiscated as part of the investigation.
The SAPS Employee Health and Wellness Programme has been activated to provide counselling and support to the couple’s colleagues and family members, including the two minor children who were inside the house when the shooting occurred.
SAPS condemned the incident, describing it as a tragic case of domestic violence involving members of the police service.
“The South African Police Service condemns any form of violence, particularly incidents involving members of the police service who kill their partners and then fatally shoot themselves,” the police said.
The organisation also urged its members to seek professional help if they are experiencing emotional distress.
