Johannesburg – Johannesburg authorities have warned residents to brace for severe thunderstorms that could bring flash floods, strong winds and hail across much of the city.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued the warning, prompting the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) to place disaster management and swift-water rescue teams on high alert.
EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi urged motorists and residents to avoid unnecessary risks.
“We are pleading with our motorists and residents to act responsibly and avoid unnecessary risks,” he said.
Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to stay away from rivers and streams, while parents have been urged to closely monitor children.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla warned motorists not to attempt crossing flooded roads.
“Stalled vehicles block emergency response access and present severe safety hazards,” Fihla said.
He urged drivers to slow down, keep a safe following distance, switch on headlights and obey road closures and instructions from traffic officers.
Authorities said emergency teams would remain on high alert overnight across all seven regions of Johannesburg.
