Thembisa – A 23-year-old woman has been shot and killed during an alleged robbery in Thembisa, becoming the 12th woman whose body has been found in the Ekurhuleni area in recent weeks.
The woman was reportedly on her way to work when she was attacked at about 5.45am on Monday, 28 September, on Mapungubwe Street in the Temong area.
Her belongings were taken during the incident, with Gauteng police investigating cases of murder and robbery.
Police said the woman has been identified, but her family has not yet been formally notified.
The latest killing comes as police continue to investigate a series of cases involving women whose bodies have been found in different parts of Ekurhuleni.
However, investigators have not established a link between Monday’s shooting and the recent cases.
“Preliminary investigations have not established any link between this incident and the recent cases involving the bodies of women found in Ekurhuleni,” police said.
No arrests have been made and investigators are following up on leads to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The latest death follows the discovery of the 11th woman’s body near a railway line in Struisbult, Springs, on Sunday. Gauteng police said preliminary investigations indicated that the woman, believed to be in her early 20s, had recently been murdered.
A separate woman, Ntombifuthi Nxumalo, was found dead at Mooifontein Cemetery in the Vusimusi section of Thembisa on Saturday. Police have arrested a suspect in connection with her murder.
Despite the growing number of cases, police have cautioned against drawing conclusions about a possible connection between all the deaths while investigations are ongoing.
