Cape Town – A 24-year-old man from Greenpoint, Kimberley, has been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for fatally stabbing his 50-year-old father during a confrontation at their home in October 2025.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said Fergus Moeketsi Links was sentenced in the Kimberley Regional Court following an investigation by Detective Sergeant Nomathamasanqa Molusi of the Kimberley Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.
According to police, the incident occurred at approximately 18:30 on 6 October 2025, when the deceased arrived home with his partner, who is also Links’ mother.
“Links allegedly confronted his father. When the situation escalated, the accused stabbed his father,” SAPS said in a statement.
Police and emergency medical personnel were called to the scene, where the 50-year-old man was declared dead.
SAPS said Molusi’s investigation secured compelling evidence against Links. The detective also successfully opposed his bail application, resulting in him remaining in custody until his conviction and sentencing.
The court sentenced Links to 10 years’ imprisonment, of which four years were suspended for five years, on condition that he is not convicted of a similar offence committed during the suspension period.
The court further declared him unfit to possess a firearm.
The acting Frances Baard District Commissioner, Brigadier Nicholas Mtongana, commended Molusi for her work on the case.
Mtongana praised the detective’s “dedication and professionalism in ensuring that justice was served”.
SAPS said it remained committed to bringing perpetrators to justice in line with its Reset Agenda.
