Northern Cape – A 76-year-old woman has been arrested in Pofadder, Northern Cape, for allegedly dealing in dagga after police uncovered suspected drugs and cash during a raid on her home.
The arrest follows an operation by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) attached to the Namakwa District Task Team, who continue to intensify efforts to curb the distribution and sale of illicit drugs in the area.
According to SAPS, officers carried out the operation on Wednesday, 29 July, at around 08:00, after receiving information about alleged drug-dealing activities at a residence in Madeliefie Laan, Pofadder.
“Members attached to the Namakwa District Task Team (Shift A and Shift B) executed a tactical operation at a residence in Madeliefie Laan in Pofadder, following information received regarding alleged drug-dealing activities,” SAPS said in a statement.
Police said the intelligence was immediately acted upon.
“The information was swiftly operationalised, and police members proceeded to the identified premises, where they found a 76-year-old female occupant,” the statement said.
During a search of the property, officers allegedly discovered drugs and money believed to have been generated through illegal drug sales.
“A search conducted at the residence led to the seizure of suspected dagga, as well as cash believed to be the proceeds of illegal drug sales,” SAPS said.
“The 76-year-old female was arrested on a charge of dealing in dagga and appeared in the Pofadder Magistrate’s Court on the same day.”
Police said operations targeting drug trafficking and the sale of illicit substances will continue across the Namakwa policing precinct as part of ongoing efforts to remove drugs from communities.
