Gqebera – A 28-year-old foreign national has been arrested in connection with the murder of five young men who were gunned down in Motherwell, Eastern Cape, last month.
The arrest follows an intensive investigation by the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit in Gqeberha into the mass shooting that claimed the lives of five men on 27 May 2026.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), detectives acted on intelligence gathered during the investigation and launched a tracing operation from the evening of 4 June until the morning of 5 June. The operation culminated in the successful arrest of the suspect.
The case relates to a deadly shooting incident that occurred at about 1.33pm on 27 May at a residence in Mnenga Street, NU10, Motherwell.
Police were called to the scene following reports of gunfire and discovered five male victims who had sustained gunshot wounds.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the motive for the shooting, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killings are continuing.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata praised the investigating team for their efforts in securing the arrest.
Ncata commended the detectives for their dedication and commitment in pursuing the case and bringing a suspect into custody.
Police have not released further details regarding the suspect’s court appearance.
