Boksburg – A 19-year-old motorist was arrested after being caught driving at 214km/h in a 100km/h zone on the R21 freeway in Boksburg, Gauteng.
According to News24, the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) recorded excessive speed during a law enforcement operation and stopped the vehicle.
The driver, who was unable to justify the high speed, was arrested on charges of reckless and negligent driving and detained at Boksburg North police station.
“While conducting high-speed law enforcement operations using ProLaser 4 speed measuring equipment, Officers recorded a grey Audi travelling at an excessive speed of 214 km/h in a 100 km/h zone,” The Citizen quoted EMPD spokesperson Kelebogile Thepa, as saying.
“The vehicle was subsequently stopped, and the driver failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for travelling at such a dangerously high speed.”
The teen is expected to appear in court.
Authorities warned that speeding remains a major contributor to road fatalities and said enforcement operations will continue.
