Durban – Police are investigating an incident in which a 13‑year‑old girl was allegedly drugged during a funeral in the north of Durban on Friday, 22 May 2026.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa), the teenager and her father sought assistance after she reportedly consumed a beverage offered by another female attendee.
Shortly after drinking it, she became disoriented and later had little recollection of events.
Family members said the girl left the funeral with the female and was missing for about three hours before being located. Medical tests later confirmed she had ingested codeine.
Her father alleged she may have been sexually assaulted, citing visible bruises on her neck and body.
Reaction officers interviewed the teenager, who admitted she had lied about parts of the sequence of events and was later in the company of her 19‑year‑old boyfriend while relatives searched for her.
She maintained, however, that she unknowingly consumed the substance at the funeral.
Her father indicated he intends to pursue further medical examinations before deciding on next steps.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether criminal charges will be laid, but investigations are continuing.
