Pretoria – President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation on Thursday, 23 April 2026, at 4pm, in a media briefing at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, accompanied by Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia.
The address comes amid mounting scrutiny of the South African Police Service following the court appearance of National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola.
Masemola briefly appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on charges related to alleged violations of the Public Finance Management Act tied to a R228 million police health services tender.

Prosecutors have indicated plans to link his case to that of alleged tenderpreneur Vusimuzi Matlala and multiple co-accused, as investigations continue.
Police have acknowledged that public trust in the service has declined.
Spokesperson Athlenda Mathe described the situation as a “defining moment,” emphasising that the case tests the organisation’s commitment to accountability and the rule of law.
She said the SAPS must confront internal weaknesses, rebuild public confidence, and ensure ethical conduct, stressing that “no one is above the law.”
Masemola is expected to return to court on 13 May 2026.
