Johannesburg – Popular Fourways restaurant Humble Harry’s has announced its closure after 32 years in the restaurant industry, bringing an end to a longstanding presence in the Johannesburg neighbourhood.
The restaurant, located at the Leaping Frog Centre in Fourways, announced its decision on Wednesday, 4 November, saying difficult circumstances had brought its journey to an end.
“It is with a heavy heart that Paul Economou and the Humble Harry’s team announce the closure of our beloved restaurant,” the announcement read.
“After 32 years in the restaurant industry in Fourways, including 18 wonderful years of Humble Harry’s, difficult circumstances have brought this chapter to a close.”
According to Daily Investor, the establishment became a popular neighbourhood gathering spot, serving customers everything from breakfast and coffee to evening meals and drinks.
It was also known for its Tuesday date-night promotion, which allowed one dining partner to eat for free.
Beyond its restaurant operations, Humble Harry’s developed a reputation for supporting disadvantaged members of the community through initiatives such as an annual breakfast for the less fortunate and its Simple Sacks project, which provided bags of everyday essentials for people in need.
In a 2018 report, Fourways Review highlighted the restaurant’s involvement in the Simple Sacks initiative, with owner Paul Economou encouraging customers to purchase the bags and help vulnerable members of the community.
Reflecting on the closure, the restaurant said it had become much more than a business to Economou.
“It has been a place filled with familiar faces, lasting friendships, laughter and countless special memories,” the statement said.
It also thanked customers for their continued support over the years, adding: “Your loyalty, kindness and support have meant more to Paul than words can express. You were the reason he looked forward to coming to work every morning.”
The closure comes against the backdrop of continued pressure on South African businesses.
