Cape Town – Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana is under pressure to strengthen South Africa’s public finances while addressing rising living costs, weak economic growth and mounting demands for government support as he delivers the 2026 Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) in Parliament on Wednesday.
The speech will outline the government’s fiscal position and spending priorities amid competing demands to reduce borrowing and provide relief to households facing higher fuel and transport costs.
The statement comes as stronger tax collections offer some relief to the Treasury, with corporate tax receipts rising on the back of improved mining profits. However, economic growth remains weak, while rising oil prices and borrowing costs threaten to undermine the fiscal outlook.
