Cape Town – Billionaire businessman Johann Rupert has won a long-running boardroom battle for control of the multibillion-rand The Bridge Stellenbosch development in Stellenbosch, defeating former friend and business associate Rurik Göbel, reports say.
According to News24, the dispute centred on a proposed R2.3 billion land transaction linked to the 340-hectare mixed-use development in Muldersvlei, outside Stellenbosch. The conflict reportedly ended a friendship spanning nearly two decades between Rupert and Göbel. Rupert had previously accused the Göbel brothers of attempting to secure substantial commissions from the deal, allegations they denied.
According to the investigation by the publication, Rupert has now secured control of the project companies behind The Bridge Stellenbosch following a series of legal and governance battles, including court proceedings and an independent investigation led by retired judge Dennis Davis. The findings of that investigation have not been made public.
Major mixed-use economic hub
Located on 340 hectares between Stellenbosch, Paarl and Cape Town, The Bridge Stellenbosch is envisioned as a major mixed-use economic hub incorporating residential, commercial, industrial, educational and innovation precincts. The development is expected to generate about R60 billion in economic activity over its lifespan and create approximately 13,000 permanent jobs, making it one of the largest private-sector developments planned in the Western Cape.
With the boardroom dispute now resolved in Rupert’s favour, the development is expected to proceed under clearer governance as major infrastructure works continue.
The victory further expands Rupert’s influence beyond the luxury goods sector, where he chairs Richemont, owner of brands such as Cartier, Montblanc and Van Cleef & Arpels, Business Insider Africa reported.
Analysts say the outcome gives investors greater certainty over a project that could become a major economic node in the Cape Winelands and one of the Western Cape’s most transformative developments.
