Cape Town – Winning a reality television competition may seem like a dream come true, but for singer Paxton Fielies, the experience came with challenges that went far beyond the spotlight.
The former Idols SA winner recently appeared on the Plugged In Podcast dxb, where she opened up about the realities of becoming an overnight success as a teenager and the life lessons she learnt after winning the competition.
Reflecting on her journey, Fielies said some of her biggest lessons had little to do with music.
“I had to learn a lot of difficult life lessons at a young age,” she said.
“One of them being that sometimes money doesn’t change the people who have it, it changes the people around them.”
Fielies made history in 2017 when, at just 17 years old, she became the youngest winner of Idols SA, taking home the Season 13 title.

Her victory earned her more than R1 million in cash, a brand-new car, a recording contract, as well as several other prizes, including fashion vouchers and music equipment.
Although many viewers celebrated her success, Fielies said the sudden fame and financial rewards brought unexpected challenges.
“It was a different kind of reality. I was still young, so I took everything at face and heart value, but I had to quickly learn that what I pour into others I won’t necessarily receive in return.”
She explained that winning the competition changed more than just her career, forcing her to reassess her relationships and the people around her.
According to Fielies, receiving such a significant financial reward at a young age also taught her the importance of protecting her peace and setting healthy boundaries.
“My mindset completely changed, and that shift had to happen for me to adjust to my new norm.”
She added that many of the lessons she learnt came as a direct result of the opportunities and prizes that followed her Idols SA victory.
While the competition opened doors for her music career, it also introduced her to responsibilities and realities that most teenagers never have to face.
Now 26, Fielies says she looks back on her Idols SA journey as a chapter that shaped not only her career but also her personal growth, teaching her valuable lessons that continue to influence her life today.
