Cassper Nyovest faces backlash over claims about Musk’s Starlink plans

Johannesburg – South African rapper Cassper Nyovest has come under fire on social media after praising Elon Musk and his Starlink satellite internet ambitions, with his comments sparking debate over technology, inequality and internet access in South Africa.

Cassper argued that widespread high-speed internet access could transform opportunities for African artists, particularly those in townships and rural communities.

The rapper suggested that better connectivity could allow musicians to build their own digital platforms, distribute their work independently and have greater control over their income.

Cassper cited Tanzanian musician Diamond Platnumz as an example of an African artist who has developed media infrastructure around his brand.

His comments, however, drew criticism online, with some South Africans questioning his understanding of Starlink’s regulatory status and the broader debate surrounding Elon Musk.

One social media post mocking the rapper described his comments as “exactly how people without matric sound”.

Fellow musician Kabelo Motsamai, popularly known as Prince Kaybee, also criticised the rapper’s remarks, bringing their long-standing feud back into the spotlight. The Fetch Your Life hitmaker wrote:

Starlink, operated by Musk’s SpaceX, uses low-Earth-orbit satellites to provide high-speed internet, including in areas where conventional broadband infrastructure is limited. The service has remained controversial in South Africa amid regulatory and licensing debates.
