Johannesburg – Harmony Gold Mining has appointed two independent non-executive directors, Alwyn Pretorius and James Boardman, to its board as the R179 billion mining group seeks to strengthen its corporate oversight and strategic capabilities.
The appointments took effect on 15 October 2026, according to an official company announcement published on Harmony Gold’s website on 16 October.
Harmony Gold, which is chaired by South African billionaire Patrice Motsepe, said both appointments had satisfied the independence requirements of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) Listings Requirements. The company also confirmed that the required assessments of the directors’ suitability had been completed.
Pretorius brings extensive mining and international operational experience to the board. He previously held senior positions at Newmont Corporation, including regional senior vice-president for Africa and South America and managing director of its Papua New Guinea operations. He also worked at Harmony between 2006 and 2015, including as chief operating officer.
Boardman, a Chartered Financial Analyst, has experience in capital markets, private equity and corporate advisory. His career includes roles at the JSE, Bain & Company and private investment firms, with expertise in valuation, risk management and corporate governance, BusinessTech reported.
Motsepe said the appointments would strengthen the company’s oversight and support its long-term objectives.
“Their combined experience will further strengthen the Board’s oversight capabilities and contribute to Harmony’s global competitiveness and focus on safety, operational excellence, disciplined growth and long-term value creation,” he said.
Harmony Gold operates mines in South Africa and has international gold and copper assets in Australia and Papua New Guinea. The appointments add experience in mining operations and financial markets to the board as the company oversees its domestic and international business interests.
