Cape Town – Global mining giant Anglo American believes South Africa remains a major mining destination despite market volatility and uncertainty, but says regulatory delays, transport infrastructure and energy security must improve to attract further investment.
According to Business Insider Africa, Anglo American chief executive Duncan Wanblad said the country’s mineral wealth continues to offer significant opportunities, provided businesses operate in a more competitive environment.
“We’ve made commitments in terms of exploration investment in South Africa, and despite the challenges, despite the volatility, despite the uncertainty, the opportunity remains huge for us,” Wanblad said during a discussion at the Joburg Indaba mining conference.
The company has invested about R11.2 billion ($677 million) in an iron-ore project at Sishen in the Northern Cape, underscoring the strategic importance of its South African operations.
Modern mining cadastral system
Wanblad identified three priorities for unlocking further investment: simplifying administrative processes, improving rail and port infrastructure, and strengthening energy security.
He also called for a more efficient regulatory environment and the implementation of a modern mining cadastral system to improve transparency and encourage exploration.
Business Day reported that South Africa’s mining industry continues to face constrained investment, rising costs and logistical bottlenecks, despite stronger mineral reserves and sustained demand for platinum-group metals.
The report cited a PwC assessment warning that limited investment in recent years has put production under pressure, preventing mining companies from fully capitalising on higher commodity prices.
Dominant position in platinum-group metals
Meanwhile, Semafor said that South Africa is seeking to use its dominant position in platinum-group metals to attract investment from the United States and China, both of which require the minerals for industrial and technological applications.
South Africa’s mineral wealth, particularly its platinum-group metal reserves, remains a major competitive advantage. However, sustained investment and improvements to infrastructure and regulation will be crucial to translating that potential into new mining projects, economic growth and jobs.
